GAME BALANCE

Project Description:

At one of my previous roles, we had to create two local multiplayer games that would be played by hundreds of people. Therefore, designing the balance of the game was vital, since the game had to deliver a consistently challenging yet fun experience to all players.

To achieve this goal, many factors of the games such as player speed, jump height, powerup gameplay effects, obstacle spawn pattern, and score points spawn rate had to be fine tuned.

For example, when players were temporarily eliminated after hitting too many obstacles in the running game, the game would spawn them in a bit of an advantageous position to make sure they would not get stuck in a negative feedback loop and keep getting eliminated.

Another example would be to adjust the rarity of the in-game powerups so that the more game changing ones would not spawn as much to feel more special. Furthermore, frequent player-testing sessions were conducted and user feedback was incorporated to ensure that the game was indeed well balanced for all players.
